Hate Watch: Limbaugh, Hagee attack Marriage Equality

Let’s be totally honest. Every time a wing-nut talk show host or pastor starts spewing anti-gay rhetoric chances are it’s because either their ratings are slipping or their donations are down.
Rush Limbaugh and televangelist John Hagee have both been around long enough to know how the game is played. Once you attack a minority group or make a hateful comparison from your bully pulpit you are almost guaranteed hundreds if not thousands of re-tweets, Facebook memes and people tuning in to see how you are going to handle the controversy.
Sadly, hate makes big headlines.
During his nationally syndicated radio show on Wednesday, Limbaugh chose to compare marriage equality with pedophilia:
“There is a movement on to normalize pedophilia, and I guarantee you your reaction to that is probably much the same as your reaction when you first heard about gay marriage,” Limbaugh told his listeners. “What has happened to gay marriage? It’s become normal — and in fact, with certain people in certain demographics it’s the most important issue in terms of who they vote for. So don’t pooh-pooh. There’s a movement to normalize pedophilia,” the conservative talk show host told his listeners.
Hagee, meanwhile, told his viewers that anything but a male and female marriage is “two disturbed people playing house.”
Both comments come from men who know how to manipulate an audience. Hagee has been using the “homosexuals are taking over America” theme as a fundraising scare tactic for years. Limbaugh, of course, is one of the great masters of spewing hate in the name of creating “entertaining controversy.” Neither comment comes as a surprise.
Fortunately, both men are a part of a dwindling segment of America. It doesn’t take a Nate Silver to pick up any sort of polling research to know that the majority of Americans, especially younger Americans, no longer view LGBT equality as part of some sort satanic plot.
All one has to do is look at right-wing talk radio’s aging audience and declining ratings to know that Limbaugh and Hagee’s days of being any sort of influential force in this country are coming to a close. Both of them are smart enough to know that, but as long as hate pays the bills, buys their mansions and puts them in the spotlight, they just won’t care.
