After spending months writing and re-writing, a group of Idaho teens are ready to tell their stories. Last October, the group participated in a week–long writing workshop led by Thomas Dean Kellogg of the Mentor Artists Playwrights Project.
The eleven Borah High School students are made up of a diverse group of young people with some amazing stories to tell. According to a press release, “the teen’s backgrounds include Native American, Latino, LGBT, Euro American and Refugee students from Somalia, Zimbabwe, The Congo, Afghanistan, and Pakistan”. Groups that aren’t normally represented or heard from in Idaho theater.
According to a facebook invite,”‘Our Voices’ has a real and immediate emotional impact on its cross-cultural participants and audience that cannot be provided by a film, lecture, or demonstration of traditional music or dance.”
“The ‘Our Voices’ dramatic readings are part of Kessler-Keener Lecture’s long-term ongoing effort to increase friendship, respect, and understanding through cross cultural dialogue,” says the press release.
The project “aims to mentor young people in the use of artistic skills to experience and develop confidence in their creative self-expression and inspire them to apply these skills to complete high school and pursue post-secondary education. It also provides a rare opportunity for the community to experience a contemporary, personal expression of other cultures in Idaho.”
